App by app
Endel
Endel and Raumo both make their sound on the device rather than streaming tracks, and both work offline. Endel adapts to inputs such as the time, the weather, your movement and, with an Apple Watch, your heart rate, and calls its system AI-powered; Raumo’s composer follows written musical rules and reads no health or location data. Endel lists account details among the data linked to you; Raumo has no account.
Where Endel is stronger: it runs on far more devices, including Apple Watch, Apple TV, Android, the web and Windows, and has artist collaborations.
Portal
Portal plays immersive recordings of real places, made by field recordists in Ambisonics and Dolby Atmos, with video and head-tracked spatial audio. Raumo composes music and lets you place each sound in its room yourself. Both work offline. Portal’s privacy label lists no data linked to you; Raumo has no account and no third-party analytics.
Where Portal is stronger: recordings of actual places with video, smart-light integration and alarms, and apps for iPad, Mac and Vision Pro.
Brain.fm
Brain.fm offers pre-made tracks for activities, with an adjustable intensity, and requires an account. Raumo composes as you listen and has no account.
Where Brain.fm is stronger: one account across iPhone, Android, the web and desktop, and a large catalogue in many genres.
Dark Noise
Dark Noise is an ambient noise app with a library of more than 50 sounds, a volume for each and fade-out timers; its sounds are stored on the device. Raumo also offers white, pink and brown noise, tape textures and nature as sounds of its room, and adds composed music.
Where Dark Noise is stronger: a larger dedicated noise library, iPad and Mac apps, and mature integrations such as HomePod through Shortcuts and AirPlay.
Bloom and Generative.fm
Bloom, by Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers, and Generative.fm, by Alex Bainter, are generative like Raumo. Bloom is an instrument you play by touching the screen, with a player that continues on its own. Generative.fm is a website of generative pieces you choose but do not change. Raumo writes complete soundscapes, with harmony, melody and form, and places their sounds in a room you shape.
Where they are stronger: Bloom has been on the iPhone since 2008, is a one-time purchase and invites you to play it. Generative.fm runs in any browser, is pay what you want and is open source.
What Raumo does not do
Raumo is for iPhone only and in English. It has no Apple Watch, iPad, Mac, Android or web app, it does not adapt to health data or your location, and it is not yet on the App Store.
